Engo's 3D printing service specializes in FDM (fusion deposition modeling) ABS plastic
prototypes. Using ABS
production-grade thermoplastic, models are plastic printed from the bottom up with
precisely deposited layers of modeling and support material.
Material is "real" ABS plastic with all its native properties not a
cured resin as in stereo lithography. Printing from the bottom up
allows for difficult to impossible to machine features like hollow
cavities and overhangs. There's no
waiting for models to “cure” — they're hard right out of the printer. A
water-based solution removes the support material to complete your
detailed design. The
picture on the lower left shows the Amber support material before its
dissolved away(Click
picture to Enlarge). Engo's 3D printing service can have your parts to
you in a few days (depending on it's size) compared to weeks at a
machine shop.

Here is how we finish (optional) an FDM 3D printed plastic prototype from our
3D printing service. First you can
see the pattern of the printing around this 1.375 tall window and the
bottom (1st 2 pictures). This pattern is filled with a thin coat of plastic filler and
sanded. Next can be primer or texture paint depending on the desired
finish. After allowing the primer to dry the final color is applied and
the 3D printed plastic prototype is ready for assembly.
